“Did you hear what happened?” Ana Hernandez whispered from the lower bunk. Across from them, the other two bunkmates snored away.
“Not exactly,” Mia said. By the time they had retrieved her from Trent’s office, most inmates were already back to their bunks and lights were out. The guards kept a close eye on them, making rounds often.
Mia glanced over her shoulder, and when Bruce turned around to go talk to the guard in the station, she slid down to Ana’s bed. She was too hyper to sleep after the impromptu night of lovemaking she’d shared with Trent. “What happened?”
Ana sat on the thin mattress. “Torres fought with Smith.”
The image of Torres’s burly body came to mind, and Mia immediately felt bad for scrawny Smith, a meth addict who had come to the prison about five months prior. “Why?” Mia asked, if only to carry on the conversation. She’d witnessed grown women fighting over frivolities like tampons and a Milky Way candy bar.
“Because Torres thought Smith hit on her girl.”
“Wow, did she?”
Ana Hernandez shrugged. “They’re segregated from the rest of us until they talk to the disciplinary board in the morning. Then they’ll probably go to maximum security, at least one of them. Probably Torres.”
Mia crossed her legs. “Because she instigated.”
“Because Smith is prettier. Last time Torres shaved her legs, Obama was president.”
Mia chuckled, then quickly covered her mouth so the guards wouldn’t hear them and tell her to go back to her bunk. After fights everyone seemed on edge. “Do you think the board will do that? They seem honest.”
Ana rolled her eyes. “Mia, I don’t know what you’ve been putting in your stale cereal, but you need to get real. Some guards take advantage of pretty girls. Hell, I wouldn’t be shocked if counselors did the same.”
Mia’s stomach hardened, but she looked Ana straight in the eye and said, “I never heard anything.”
Ana gave her a once over, perhaps deciding if she believed her or not. Or maybe I’m just paranoid. “Girl, after three stints at five different prisons, I’ve heard it all. By the way, did you know our warden might leave? My friend cleaned his office the other day and overheard him talking to his superiors.”
Mia shook her head. She never made much of the current warden. Llewellyn seemed straight-laced and didn’t have any scandals muddying his reputation, as far as she knew.
“Word is he’ll get a bonus if he finds a replacement right away. His assistant can’t wait. I bet his assistant is in hot water because he made out with an inmate once, and if she says anything, he could be fired.”
Mia pretended to listen to the rest of Ana’s hot gossip. Pretty soon she’d have to go to her own bed before the guards walked in their direction. A pang of relief washed over her. At least she didn’t have anything to worry about, after all, Trent was a counselor and therefore not up for the warden position. Otherwise they could be in serious trouble.
